Examples
Here are some examples of how people have used
FindinSite-CD and
Dynamic-CD.
Software Producer
Well known software authors such as Microsoft and Sun routinely supply developers with information
on CD (often DVD). The medium can contain massive quantities of information, all instantly available and it
can contain examples running outside the confines of a HTML browser if required. A search engine on the CD
(like FindinSite-CD) makes it much easier to find what you're looking for.
Builders Merchant
A Builders Merchant has developed a sophisticated web site to provide their customers with a wide
range of information. However a significant number of their customers do not have constant access to the
internet from their desk top so they want to distribute their web site on CD. Because their web site
uses scripts to access a database it can only work on CD with a program such as Dynamic-CD.
Weaving Machine Manufacturer
A weaving machine manufacturer has traditionally supplied detailed manuals on paper. Now one CD can
hold Spare parts catalogues, maintenance schedules and technical drawings as well as training media and health
and safety notices.
A significant point with this example and the previous one is that of internet access. Many companies have
strictly limited connection between their internal networks and the internet because they are worried about
security and because they don't want employees to waste time browsing. In addition to this
many people who would have traditionally looked through manuals or catalogues are out on the shop floor or
on building sites working with a lap-top.
Wholefood Merchant Cooperative
A small cooperative has been supplying its customers with a catalogue four times a year. They are concerned
about the environmental impact of distributing information on paper but they cannot justify the expense of
setting up an on-line shop. They cut their costs and paper consumption by offering their customers the option
of taking the catalogue on CD. The information is simply extracted from the format being sent to the printer
but with the addition of a search engine.
As a second stage they include their stock database on CD with simple script (.ASP) pages giving access to it. A facility
is also provided on the CD to email orders back to the supplier.
Conference Proceedings
An organisation runs a major conference once a year as well as several seminars at different times around
the world. In general the speakers are altering their presentations up to the eleventh hour.
Although asked to send the material in well in advance in PowerPoint format some speakers arrive with the data
on disk on the morning of their talk. By using FindinSite-CD the organizers
benefit from being able to produce a copy of the entire conference proceedings on CD at the close of the conference.
The CD includes a fully searchable collection of the PowerPoint presentations, the speeches in Word format, miscellaneous
spread-sheets with example calculations and supporting data as well as previously published articles in pdf format.
College Course
A complete course is put on CD including lecture notes, slides, worked exercises, tests, data
spreadsheets and even text books where the college or lecturer holds the copyright. Rather than follow
the expensive route of converting all the data to a bespoke "electronic course" format the files are
linked by a simple HTML framework and made searchable by including FindinSite-CD on the CD.
